17. Sawyer
Darcy: Itâs not cute anymore, Sawyer. Time to put your big boy pants on and deal with the real world. Where are you?
I sighed as I scrolled through my text string with Darcy. Not knowing my whereabouts was really getting to her. It shouldnât be that way. First and foremost, she should be my cousin. Her texts should be more like, âHope youâre having fun!â, âWill you be at Thanksgiving dinner?â, âRemember that time Uncle Donnie told that story about how he plugged a bullet hole with a tampon at the dinner table and Grandma smacked him in front of everyone?â
But of course, thatâs not what I got. Changes were going to be made after the tour. Darcy and I needed some separation. My career was her whole life, and it should never have gotten that way. It was a sign of my weaknesses. No more. I wasnât that person anymore.
Me: Iâm within the four corners of the continental United States.
Darcy: Why wonât you just tell me? Iâm your manager.
Me: For fuckâs sake, Darce. Take the downtime and go on a real vacation. I wonât be back for another few weeks. I sent all the new songs to the band, but itâs going to be an acoustic album.
Darcy: The hell? Thatâs not your lane.
Me: Label loves the idea. Itâs like a special edition album. Weâre going to do it on vinyl. Hang on and Iâll send you the file so you can listen. Youâll love it.
I closed out of the text string and opened my desktop from my phone, quickly shooting the file off to her.
Reopening the text chat, I watched the little dots around her name indicating she was responding. Since the message was taking so long for her to type, I shot off another quick one.
Me: Iâm calling a moratorium on anything having to do with our professional lives. Everything is in Paulâs hands right now. Once I get the bandâs feedback, Iâll send the rough file to the label and set up the recording dates. If your next text isnât that youâre heading out on a vacation for at least two weeks, Iâm temporarily blocking your number until I get back to LA. I can give tough love, too, Darce.
Closing the text app on my phone, I dropped it in my lap and sighed, running my hands through my hair. Ivy was driving, and we were on our way to her grandparentsâ farm to check on them after the storm.
âShit,â I muttered, picking my phone back up. I opened my text stream with my assistant. Tyler and I hadnât talked a whole lot. I wondered how he was occupying his time.
Me: I need you to contact Paul and make sure Ivy has full access on the tour. Tell him I want a Staff All Access pass for her and her sister, Janie. They are to be able to come and go completely as they please with no pushback from anyone. This includes access to my personal dressing room for Ivy.
